Evidence-based public health is a relatively new field.  It focuses on the development, implementation, and evaluation of effective programs and policies in public health through the application of the principles of scientific reasoning including systematic use of data and information systems, and appropriate use of behavioral science and program planning models.    The purpose of this partnership is to build local capacity for evidence-based decision making to prevent disease and protect the environment in Peru.  The focus of the partnership is on the link between adverse health effects and contamination of air, water, and soil from mining and waste disposal into the environment.  Through hands-on, learning-by-doing methodology, decision makers will develop evidence-based strategies to address the health and environmental challenges of the region.  They will identify methods for increasing awareness and building consensus for evidence-based decision making.  In addition, the skills and methods learned through this partnership will increase the ability of decision makers to promote environmental health programs and policies based on sound evidence, long-term planning, and community wide support that can be applied in partners’ target area but also in other regions of Peru with similar challenges.
