The Johns Hopkins University Bloomberg School of Public Health partnered with the College of Health Sciences at Muhimbili University in Tanzania and the Institute of Public Health at Makerere University in Uganda to provide African public health leaders with the training and skills needed to tackle the region’s most pressing public health challenges. The partners are joined in a consortium that includes the Tulane University School of Public Health and Tropical Medicine, the Tulane University School of Business, the George Washington University School of Public Policy and Public Administration, the World Bank Institute, the Uganda Management Institute, and the East and Southern Africa Management Institute. The partnership enables public health leaders to better envision, plan, implement, and manage effective responses to the health needs of East Africa. It seeks to mainstream leadership training for mid- and senior-level professionals, including skills for management, finance, administration, communication, and planning, within schools of public health in East Africa. Since the partnership initiated activities in 2006, USAID has contributed an additional $1.4m to further strengthen and support its efforts. A major early outcome has been the establishment of a network of schools of public health in 8 countries in Eastern Africa, seeking to, among other objectives, incorporate and standardize public health leadership courses across all the member schools’ curricula.
