To build Sokoine University of Agriculture’s (SUA) capacity to provide relevant agribusiness training, partners enhanced linkages with private sector agribusiness and developed an Agribusiness Management Program at SUA. One SUA faculty member visited OSU for three months where he observed agribusiness development center models, reviewed and revised Agribusiness MBA curricula, assessed internship models, and initiated the development of an agribusiness survey instrument.
Partners then completed a survey of 61 different firms, which started discussions with Tanzanian agribusinesses about linking with SUA and participating in the agribusiness program. With input from the private sector through the creation of an external advisory committee, partners developed a Master of Business Administration-Agribusiness degree program. Twenty-five students were accepted into the Master of Business Administration-Agribusiness program, which was launched in September 2005.
Partners also completed two agribusiness case studies, “Decisions in Global Sourcing and Supply: Deep Red Canning Company,” and “Strategic Management Options for Power Food Industries, Ltd., Dar es Salaam”. This partnership contributed to several firsts at SUA: the first applied private sector-oriented graduate program; the first external advisory committee; the first use of case studies; the first post-graduate internship program; and the first university department to engage new stakeholders in the private sector.
