The partnership goals are: 1) to improve the training of English as a Second Language (ESL) teachers through the collaborative development of a service learning curriculum which links ESL teaching to community needs; 2) to improve pedagogical approaches to teaching ESL and to encourage student research; 3) to train expert ESL mentor teachers; 4) to raise the TOEFL scores of teacher education graduates by 20 points; and 5) to impact K-12 English language learning and the community in a positive way. The role of the teacher educator will be strengthened, and an ESL/Service Learning Curriculum Guide will afford partnership participants the opportunity to engage in relevant curriculum development.
