Portland State University (PSU) is partnering with the University of Natural Sciences (UNS) in Vietnam to establish an innovative environmental community-university engagement program at UNS, the first of its kind at a university in Ho Chi Minh City. The program intends to mitigate the environmental challenges of rapid urbanization and will promote a responsible community-based governance in Vietnam’s urban centers. The partnership will create a community facilitation office at UNS, integrate curriculum for community engagement, and collaborate with numerous community organizations to undertake projects aimed at improving environmental awareness and governance. The partnership has a strong focus on public participation, stakeholder consensus, and service learning that will strengthen collaborative relationships between the government, business, and civil society actors and build citizenry and local capacity to address urban environmental challenges.
