Through the creation of the Civic Education Partnership Initiative, or “CEPI”, Bowling Green State University is partnering with Moroccan institutions with the support of the Moroccan Ministry of Education to deepen civic education program offerings in the Near East and North Africa (MENA). This three-year program identifies and develops a comprehensive portfolio of civic education modules to reinforce the teaching and learning of civic values and skills in Morocco and to promote the adaptation of the modules in other priority countries in the MENA region. Specifically, CEPI promotes civic education in the educational system of Morocco through the engagement of higher education specialists, Ministry officials, NGOs, and other stakeholders in the planning and implementation of civic education into the formal education systems. It identifies and adapts existing education modules from other civic education programs, creates additional civic education modules to reinforce culturally appropriate learning of civic values and skills throughout the education system, and creates civic linkages between schools and communities. The partnership develops pre-service teacher training and new didactic approaches for incorporating civic education into K-12 education as well as promoting the skills necessary to evaluate student learning, comprehension and ability to apply basic civic education principles through teacher training programs.
